Note: NASA recently took down Robert Simmon's page, however Robert described making the Blue marble image with Photoshop taking images from a flat map and wrapping them on to a ball. He added clouds and some artistic flair so that it would meet people's expectations of what earth should look like. (NASA did this folks, quit making excuses for them)
